It has been so long since I made a journal entry that I do not even remember when! All I can say about the last few months is that we sent out a lot of plants from our farm. Many thanks to all our gardening customers, may your plants always grow to their full potential!
Now that the shipping season for spring is done, and the fall catalog safely with the printer, we find ourselves beginning what may be a long hot summer. The vegetables are growing and peaches being picked, so all of our summer chores seem to revolve around eating! Being how we are though, flowers will be found on any ground not already occupied.
Last fall, I showed pictures of my seed collecting efforts. This past time takes place while driving; if I see a plant I want, I stop and mark it with flagging tape. It is really hard to relocate plants without a marker, since the original marker is now long gone to seed. This picture is one of the grass filters, which surround all of our fields. Grasses work well, but a few wildflowers turn it into a little prairie, which are always a wonder to behold! Flowers bring a host of winged creatures to colonize this man made habitat: Dragonflies and Butterflies, Bluebirds and Goldfinches fill a pallet of color in constant motion. But, my favorite is the constantly soaring Marsh Hawk, not seen in our fields before the prairies were planted. You don’t have to believe me, look at the picture, it can’t do justice to maybe a hundred thousand flowers.
By the way, that’s our newest pup, an Aussie named ‘Blue’. A great dog …

Returning from vacation is usually not something one looks forward to. It marks the end of the trip that you have been waiting so long to take. All the months that you spent planning, preparing, and getting everything in place seems like a distant memory now. As sad as this idea is, all good things must come to an end. If you don’t finish one vacation, how can you take another? Surely you have been dreaming of the day you can jump on a private jet, that you have hired through a company like Jettly, and travel to the likes of New York, London, Paris, and lots of other different countries and cities? Taking trips like this is what life is all about, and just think about all of the memories and stories that you’ll come back with. That alone must be enough to persuade you to take another vacation as soon as possible.
In the meantime, adjusting to the normality of your life is something that you’re going to have to focus on for now. With that being said, leaving plants in the greenhouse does leave something worth returning to. Walking into the greenhouse this morning, I was stunned to see how much all of my herb plants and flowering annuals had grown. Just look at the picture and see that our plants are ready for spring.
The basil plant had grown a full inch and the leaf buds are popping on the bay leaf plants! Spring is almost here, whether herb gardening or growing flowers and veggies this year the time to get started in now! Besides the plants, the rest of my job was about like average. Start thinking about your garden and let The Growers- Exchange.com help get your spring started.

Here I am in the Bahamas, after months of snow I was hoping to be warm for a while. Even though I am standing under a palm tree, please note I am wearing blue jeans. The Bahamas have been cold this year too! Not freezing, but not all that warm. Compared to Virginia it feels great. I have located some blooming bougainvillea and some other flowers. My next blog photo will be off masses of flowers, something all us gardeners have been dreaming about. Because it has been unusually cold here, no one has set out their annual plants yet, only the perennials are blooming now. Until then, I will be gone fishing. Talk to you later!

Every work place has certain jobs that no one looks forward to doing. But they must be done! One of ours here in the greenhouse is the annual event of putting the little water drip tubes in each pot. That doesn’t sound so bad until the number of drip tubes is considered. Each table has a thousand tubes, eight tables per greenhouse, as you can see it adds up. Broken ones have to be replaced, other than that every one is the same. It takes about a week to complete the task. If this is the kind of work you’d love to do in your greenhouse, you may want to opt for a dwarf wall greenhouse that would look amazing in your back garden.
The good news is that once the drip tube is inserted in the soil, we can feed and water that whole table with a switch. Uniform water in each pot is very important and impossible with hose watering. Once the spring crop is done, we will not face that many at once again until next year. The most important thing about the drip tubes is that they free us up to spend hands on time with the plants, not just watering all day. These little plants will be sent to zone 9-11 gardeners in just a few weeks. Plan your garden now while there is plenty of time, your plants can be ordered for the frost free date in your area.

We’re still riding out the storm(s), but look how well the plants are doing. They don’t even know it’s cold outside! See you next week!
